What is Encryption?

What Encryption actually means, buzzwords removed — with the example that makes it land.

It shows up in three forms. TLS covers whatever is moving between browser and server. Data simply sitting still is covered by encrypted storage. And hashing, which runs one way only, protects passwords by making sure the original was never stored at all.

All of it is applied by default on the modern web — certificates, SFTP, mail submitted over an encrypted port — which leaves a site owner mainly the job of not switching off what already works.

The everyday parallel

A locked pouch with exactly two keys, one at each end of the journey. Couriers, depots and anybody watching may handle it as much as they like, since the contents exist for two people.

What genuinely rides on it

Is the data on my hosting encrypted?

In transit, thoroughly: the web over HTTPS, files over SFTP, mail over TLS. For data at rest, what the storage layer does depends on the platform and the context. The safeguards built into your own software, such as hashed passwords and encrypted fields, travel with it, and those are the ones that hold wherever the site is hosted.

Can strong encryption be broken?

Against the standards in use today, no, not in any way that matters. Attacks that succeed go after implementation errors, stolen keys and compromised endpoints, since the mathematics is not where they win. Which is why careful key handling and current software deserve far more attention than worrying about ciphers.

Is the free SSL certificate genuinely free?

Entirely, on every plan. The certificate is issued as soon as the name points here and reissues itself well before it lapses. On encryption it matches any paid DV certificate — the paid options exist for wildcard coverage or organisation validation, which most sites never need.
