What is HTTPS?

What HTTPS actually means, buzzwords removed — with the example that makes it land.

The certificate makes it possible and TLS does the work. Plain HTTP is now the exception as far as browsers are concerned. They flag it, they hold back features reserved for secure pages, and they reach for the secure address first when you type a domain.

Migrating a site is a well-worn routine. Install the certificate, update the site URLs, add 301 redirects, then track down any mixed content still loading over HTTP. After that, HSTS pins browsers to the secure version for good.

The everyday parallel

Sealed envelopes rather than postcards. The same network and the same vans, but nobody along the way can read the contents or slip an extra page in, and the seal itself identifies the sender.

Any analogy flattens the detail, naturally — but this one is solid enough to think with, and thinking is what a jargon buster is for.

Without HTTPS nothing works any more, neither trust nor rankings nor the browser features you actually want. Card fields, current browser APIs and most JavaScript worth having simply refuse to work over plain HTTP, and going without hangs a warning label on your brand.

The questions that come up most

Does HTTPS cost performance?

Barely measurably. Modern TLS costs very little processing, and HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, which in practice require HTTPS, usually leave a secure site quicker than its insecure predecessor. The argument switched sides years ago and has stayed switched.

If my site runs HTTPS, is it secure?

The transport is secure, and that is the whole of the claim. What HTTPS guards is data in motion. It says nothing about the quality of your code, the strength of your passwords, or what a compromised plugin is up to. Necessary, certainly, but one layer among several.
