Why .us?
.us is the country code of the United States, relaunched for general registration in 2002 and used by businesses, organisations and individuals who want an explicitly American address. Its first rule is the nexus requirement: registrants must have a bona fide connection to the US — citizenship, residency, or a business or organisation with a genuine American presence — declared at registration. It is a light burden for anyone who honestly qualifies, and not a formality to fudge for anyone who does not.
Its second rule is the one buyers deserve to hear loudest: usTLD policy prohibits privacy and proxy registration, so the registrant details on a .us are published in a way the post-GDPR gTLD world no longer expects. For a business trading under its public identity that is usually acceptable; for an individual who prefers a private record, it is a reason to choose a different ending — and we will say so at checkout rather than after.

What counts as a US nexus?
Broadly: US citizens and permanent residents; businesses and organisations incorporated or with a bona fide presence in the United States; and foreign entities with a genuine US presence such as regular sales or an office. You declare a nexus category at registration, and it must be true — the usTLD polices the requirement and names have been lost to false declarations.
Why can't I have WHOIS privacy on my .us?
Because usTLD policy prohibits privacy and proxy services across the ending — a deliberate policy choice by the US administration of the namespace, not a registrar limitation anyone can waive. If a published registrant record is unacceptable for your project, the honest answer is a different ending; no legitimate registrar can proxy a .us for you.
Can a UK or other non-US company register a .us?
Only through a genuine American presence — regular business in the US, an office, or similar bona fide connection declared under the appropriate nexus category. A purely speculative registration with no US connection fails the requirement. If your American presence is real, the ending is available to you; if it is aspirational, secure your brand there once it becomes real.
