Why .eu?
.eu is the European Union's own ending, administered by EURid, and eligibility is the fact to know first: registration is open to businesses and organisations established in the EU, EEA or EFTA, to residents of those territories, and to EU citizens wherever in the world they live — that last route added so that citizenship, not address, carries the right. A name held without qualification can be revoked, which was demonstrated at scale when UK registrants lost eligibility after Brexit.
For a business selling across the single market, the ending does neat work: one address that reads as European in every member state, rather than visibly belonging to one country. EURid publishes only limited data for individual registrants under European data-protection law, so the public record is restrained by design. Who can register a .eu?
Organisations established in the EU, the wider EEA or EFTA; individuals resident there; and EU citizens regardless of where they live — a citizen in Canada or Australia qualifies through citizenship alone. Registrants outside all of those categories cannot hold a .eu, and the rule is enforced: names held without eligibility are subject to withdrawal.
What happened to UK-held .eu domains after Brexit?
When the UK left the EU, UK-based registrants without another qualifying route lost eligibility, and EURid suspended and ultimately revoked names that were not re-qualified — the clearest demonstration anywhere that ccTLD eligibility rules are real. UK businesses can still hold .eu names through an EU establishment, and British holders of EU citizenship qualify personally.
Is .eu better than a national ending like .de or .fr for European trade?
Different tools: a national code reads as local in one market and foreign in the others, while .eu reads as European everywhere and local nowhere. Exporters often run the pair — the national code for the home market, .eu for the cross-border storefront — and let search targeting and content do the per-country work under each.
