Why .eu?
Administered by EURid, .eu is the European Union's own ending, and eligibility is the first thing to get straight. Businesses and organisations established in the EU, EEA or EFTA may register; so may residents of those territories; and so may EU citizens wherever on earth they live, a route that exists precisely so citizenship rather than address carries the right. Hold a name without qualifying and it can be revoked. Brexit demonstrated that at scale, when UK registrants found their eligibility had simply gone.
Sell across the single market and the ending does something neat for you: one address reading as European in every member state, rather than one that visibly belongs to a single country. European data-protection law means EURid publishes only limited data for individual registrants, so restraint is built into the public record. House rules apply as everywhere else. Questions about .eu
Who can register a .eu?
Organisations established in the EU, the wider EEA or EFTA qualify. Individuals resident in those territories qualify. EU citizens qualify wherever they live, so a citizen sitting in Canada or Australia gets there on citizenship alone. Fall outside all of that and a .eu is not available to you. Teeth are attached to the rule: a name held without eligibility can be withdrawn.
What happened to UK-held .eu domains once Brexit landed?
Registrants based in the UK who had no other qualifying route lost eligibility the moment the UK left the EU. EURid suspended the names, then revoked the ones nobody re-qualified. No clearer demonstration of ccTLD eligibility exists anywhere. A UK business can still hold .eu names through an EU establishment, and British holders of EU citizenship qualify on their own account.
Trading across Europe, is .eu a better bet than a national ending like .de or .fr?
Two different tools, really. A national code makes you local in one market and foreign in every other; .eu makes you European everywhere and local nowhere. Exporters often run the pair: home market behind the national code, cross-border storefront behind .eu, with search targeting and localised content doing the per-country work further down. That split costs one extra renewal and settles an argument.
