.co.uk domain names, at home in the UK

Nominet, the UK registry, has run the .uk family since 1996, though .co.uk had already been the commercial corner of the British namespace since the hierarchy's earliest days. Buyers here read the ending as local without thinking about it: someone reachable inside their own time zone, covered by the consumer law they know, findable under UK rules. On a query with local intent it carries a real country signal. A .com has to earn that signal some other way.

Compared with the gTLD equivalent, Nominet's machinery is friendlier. A registrar move here changes the name's IPS tag instead of passing an auth code around, and it usually lands the same day; the registry also shields individuals' addresses from public view. Two habits are worth forming. Accuracy on the registrant record is the first, since Nominet validates what you file and can suspend a name whose data fails. The second is to look at the matching short .uk, which since 2019 has been a wholly separate registration open to anybody at all.
