99.9% uptime: what the number allows and what really breaks

Three nines sits on every host's homepage. Almost none say what the figure covers, what it leaves out, or how hosting platforms genuinely fail. We run one, and we think the haze around the number serves marketing better than customers, so here is the view from operations in plain words.
Begin with the arithmetic. 99.9% uptime permits 43 minutes and 50 seconds of downtime a month. 99.99% permits 4 minutes and 23 seconds. 100% does not exist and never has. A host claiming it is describing an ambition, a gap in its monitoring, or a refund policy, but not its platform.
What actually knocks websites offline
Ordered roughly by how often we meet them on shared platforms. Application faults come first: a plugin update white-screens WordPress and the site is dark while the server beneath it hums along untroubled. Then resource exhaustion, where your own surge in traffic or a neighbouring account runs into PHP process limits. Then planned work such as kernel patches and PHP upgrades, which done properly cost seconds of graceful restart. Then hardware, usually disks, which is what RAID and real backups exist for. Then events on the network, by which we mean upstream carrier trouble and DDoS. Last and best known, whole-datacentre incidents.
The order matters because the advertised figure covers only part of it. What an uptime SLA records is whether the server answered, not whether the site worked. No downtime column anywhere records the plugin that broke your checkout. Which is why daily backups and a staging environment do more for the uptime your readers actually feel than the gap between 99.9% and 99.95% ever will.
Reading an uptime guarantee properly
Three questions reduce any SLA to its substance. First, who is keeping score? A guarantee marked by the host's own monitoring, with maintenance windows carved out of it, is weaker than one you can audit yourself. Put free uptime monitoring on your site in ten minutes and you hold the scorecard.
Second, what happens when it fails? Standard SLA credits refund the downtime pro rata, which comes to pennies for an hour offline. Read the guarantee as a statement of engineering intent rather than as insurance. Judge a host on its status-page record and how it talks during an incident, not on the credit formula.
Third, what has been carved out? The usual exclusions are scheduled maintenance, emergency maintenance, DDoS, upstream failures and force majeure. A short list of them makes the headline number worth more.
How we run our end of it
In concrete terms, this is the arrangement. NVMe RAID storage, so one dead disk changes nothing. LiteSpeed serving cached pages, which keeps most traffic spikes away from PHP entirely. Per-account resource isolation, so a neighbour's difficult afternoon never becomes yours. Continuous external monitoring wired to alerts that wake a real person. Nightly backups with self-service restores, which turn the commonest failure class of all, the application kind, from an outage into a ten-minute rollback.
And the limits, said plainly. Scheduled maintenance happens here, announced in advance, off-peak, and counted in seconds. We depend on upstream networks as every other host does. A determined DDoS is weather: we soak it up and blunt it, but nobody abolishes it. We commit to 99.9% on every plan because that is the level we can hold across thousands of accounts, and we would rather explain the number than leave it on the page as decoration.

How much downtime does 99.9% uptime allow?
About 43.8 minutes a month, or roughly 8 hours 46 minutes over a year. 99.99% allows 4.4 minutes a month. Engineering that difference away costs far more than the downtime costs a typical small site, which makes 99.9% with quick, honest recovery the sensible target for shared hosting.
Is an uptime guarantee's payout worth anything?
Seldom. The usual credit refunds the downtime pro rata, which comes to pennies. Value the SLA as an engineering commitment you can hold a host to, and measure it yourself with a free external monitor rather than relying on the host's own dashboard.
