Nothing actually propagates anywhere. Your authoritative servers hand out the new answer the moment you save it. Millions of independent caches cause the delay, each keeping what it has until its own TTL expires and it asks afresh.
That is why the results look patchy, since every resolver keeps its own clock, and why some visitors see the new site while others still land on the old. Each is an honest answer from a cache at a different stage.
DNS Propagation, by way of an analogy
A software update rolling out on staggered check-in timers. The release server has the new build at once, but each device installs only when its own check comes round, so two versions run side by side for a while.
Any analogy flattens the detail, naturally — but this one is solid enough to think with, and thinking is what a jargon buster is for.

Once you know the mechanism, the panic goes. Mixed results mid-migration are physics rather than failure, and a little TTL planning beforehand squeezes the whole affair into a few minutes.

One worked example
After a migration, the office keeps loading the old server because that ISP's cache still has hours to run, while the same person's phone on mobile data already shows the new one. Neither resolver is lying; one is simply further behind.

How long does propagation actually take?
Precisely as long as the previous TTLs: minutes to a couple of hours with sensible values, and up towards a day or two with long TTLs and slow resolvers. The famous '48 hours' is the worst case rather than the average.
Once a record is saved, can propagation be hurried?
For caches you own, meaning your machine and your router, flushing them forces a refresh. Everybody else's timers belong to them. Preparation is your only genuine lever, since TTLs lowered in advance make the next change quick while this one plays out on the old settings.
If I cancel, what becomes of my site and files?
They remain yours. Download a full copy from the panel whenever you like, before or during cancellation. Names stay registered in your name for the term you paid for and can move to any registrar once the standard 60-day window has passed.
